Use polyester or polyester-blended thread with stretch velvet to allow for proper stretch and maintain seam strength. If the thread will be visible in your project, consider silk thread for an elegant finishing touch. Choose thread colors that match or complement your fabric for best results.
To create professional seams with stretch velvet, first hand baste the fabric pieces together to prevent slipping during sewing. Use a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine for strong, flexible seams that accommodate the fabric’s stretch. Since stretch velvet doesn’t fray, edges can remain unfinished at seams, simplifying your construction process.
Stretch velvet works excellently for fashion items like dresses, pants, tops, and eveningwear, especially where comfort and elegance are important. For home décor, use it to create luxurious pillows, throws, bedding, draperies, and event decorations. The fabric’s durability makes it suitable for medium-use upholstery projects as well.
When cutting stretch velvet, place weights rather than pins when possible to avoid marking the fabric. Cut in a single layer for more accurate results. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine to prevent layers from shifting. Always test your stitches on a scrap piece before starting your project.
